How we got here
Tom Ackley spent 14 years in the Air Force and 17 years with the Milwaukee Police Department, retiring as Sergeant in 2024. He started investing in vacation rentals in 2020, and like a lot of investors, he handed it to a property manager and hoped for the best.
The previous manager had it backwards. He priced high-demand nights too low and left money on the table. He priced slow nights too high, so they sat empty. The property lost revenue on both ends. The management contract came with large onboarding fees and no accountability for results. The structure protected the manager, not the owner. When Tom asked for a clear accounting of his investment, the answers were vague. He took over the property himself, still on the force. Then he took on a neighbor's. He realized he was better at running this than the professional he'd hired.
Getaway & Stay was built the other way around. Every home in our portfolio is one we'd be proud to stay in ourselves. We've turned down more properties than we've taken on, and we intend to keep the ratio that way. That's not a growth strategy. It's a quality strategy, and we think it's the right one.

Hospitality is earned, not assumed
We don't assume guests will love their stay. We inspect every property before every arrival. We check in during the stay. We fix problems before guests notice them.
Local knowledge is irreplaceable
We only manage homes in markets where we have a local team. People who live there. Who know the area, the vendors, and the quirks of every property.
Owners deserve real transparency
Monthly statements with line-item detail. No hidden fees. A direct line to a property manager who answers. We treat your investment like it's ours, because our reputation depends on it.
Scaling without letting standards slip
We're actively growing, adding properties, adding markets. Growing while simultaneously improving quality is rare and intentional. Most management companies pick one. Holding that standard as we scale is the hardest thing we do, and it's the one we refuse to compromise.
